Inspired by psychology and the notion of emotions. Understanding the complexities of how one is taught to react and think. The battle between right and wrong and what is deemed socially acceptable, yet the natural instinct could be quite the contrary. The complexities of the mind brings parallels to the workings of a maze.

Inspired by the skyline over the Northern sea whilst designing cruise liners. The haze of the simmering sun trapped behind the thick, dark and rapidly moving clouds and witnessing the contribution of the vessel’s fumes highlighted how we physically can be trapped and also how we trap things too.

Swapping the cotton canvas for a man made product compiled of 100% natural silk emphasises the message of materialism found throughout our homes. This piece is a reflection of how we treat our possessions and how they can warp our concept of what is an imagined reality. Albeit physical the price of these items vary in the eye of the beholder. The pattern reflects the wear and tear of a typical domestic carpet.

A simple pattern of geometric forms finding a way of working in harmony. Inspired by the charming mosaic pavements on the streets of Lisbon. The pain staking man hours it would take to make these man-made tiles and then build a large scale picture from thousands of pieces was the inspiration for this piece.
Subconsciously, materialism and consumerism navigate us daily without us even realising. How our desires, hopes and dreams are wrapped around these imagined realities created by historic ideologies and social norms. This piece represents how apparent it is in our homes. We use materials taken from the natural world and hang them against our man made environments for our comfort, desires and status.

The unpredictable seas is something I can stare at in bewilderment all day. The ferocity, yet calmness was something I witnessed through sailing and cruising around the North Sea, the thick layers of paint applied via palette application resemble the fear and the hues pick up on reflection of light carried with it without consent.

For my first solo exhibition I wanted to challenge myself and present a piece that was out of my comfort zone, therefore playing with scale exposed me as an artist and the title being a metaphor for feelings towards my first show. As an artist people are curious, intrigued and want to dig deep by asking questions. This can be quite intimidating, leaving a slight vulnerable feeling . The layers built up in this piece meant I could expose different textures and capacity of hues representing these emotions. Using the palette technique allows you to pull away semi dry and wet paint together, therefore creating slight peaks and cracks. Both representing feelings and emotions.

The sister to ‘The Deep’. The granules of sand that form the vast coastlines. Whilst the repetition is there, the ebbs and flows of sand create patterns and paths for us to discover.

Inspired by man made materials. Steel is used extensively in ship building. De- signed to withstand the rough seas and elements. The sea salt thrashes against the paint work attacking the steel leaving it to erode. It gives a new touch, feel and aesthetic to the material, changing its hues, look and tactility. This piece rep- resents the beauty that can be found in change and how erosion can be seen as a beautiful process transforming the very foundation of something.

This piece was based on a previous commission with a brief for an abstract take on a spring meadow. Inspired by village life in Nottinghamshire, I based this pattern and hues on a deconstructed daisy against the purple sunset behind rollings hills. The more the piece evolved, the more it made me smile, thinking of fond memories of roaming the fields with my sisters as children.
